The Scotch Plains township in Union County was originally incorporated in 1878 but got its official name in 1917. Settled by Scottish Quakers as early as 1684, the township is rumored to have been named for George Scott, a leader of those settlers. The sprawling Watchung Reservation is a nature reserve spanning nearly 2,000 acres in the northern side of the township and offers numerous outdoor and indoor activities. Ponderosa Farm Park is another popular outdoor destination as well.
